Lab safety really does blow

I can't believe someone died from BuLi. I agree with Kyle at Chemblog that academic safety blows. When I moved from academia to industry I was totally bemused by what seemed to me to be insane levels of safety regulations but after a year I don't think I could go back to university safety standards.

I know that not all universities have problems but I know that dodgy crap I pulled all the time (we were allowed to work on our own and I was always in the lab alone at the weekends).
