We have an intern (year long intern type thingy) and he has a tendency to read things on people's desk when he arrives 30min early in the morning. I bike in so arrive early to change and my colleague has noticed him do it too. He also listens in to private conversations and work conversations but pretends he isn't. I'm pretty sure he's reporting on events in our office to another member of staff (they were bestest friends at uni apparently). She in turns twists the facts, embelishes then passes on to management.
Any ideas?

Clean desk policy? Or the old 'make something up to catch a gossip' trick?
Sounds irritating though, particularly if it is being passed on incorrectly/exaggerated.
Agree with propter doc.
On a lighter note, how about leaving books like the following:
(1)"how to have an easy pregnancy"
(2) "how to hide dead bodies - the bestselling manual for serial killers"
(3) "how to commit suicide effectively and efficiently"
(4) "coming out to your parents"
All bound to go around in the office. And even better if you can drag a couple of your colleagues to go with the idea.
