So a couple of weeks ago my Grannie nearly burnt her house down. She's fine although her kitchen is a write-off and the rest of her bungalow is smoke damaged. Luckily she woke up and she's fine. She's now staying with my parents until her place is sorted by the insurance company. They've just been told today that it will take 2 months to get it sorted - seriously the world's smallest kitchen and it'll take 2 months. Obviously we're all just very glad that she's ok but it still totally sucks for my folks. The thing is my Mum has always promised my Grannie that she'll never put her in a home - that's her worst fear. Unfortunately my Aunt (Mum's Sister) is a prize bitch and used to be the matron of a nursing home and would quite gladly pack Grannie off especially if it meant getting her mitts on Grannie's house. The fact that my Aunt appears to be minted is neither here nor there she's just obsessed with money - my folks are the complete opposite. The other issue is that my Mum only finally retired from academia about a month ago - she's still writing books but she's out of the Uni now. My folks have just moved to their idyllic new home in a tiny place in the Mother Country and were all set with adventurous plans for their retirement and becoming Grandparents. As their new place has lots of stairs and is essentially in the middle of nowhere they can't leave Grannie on her own overnight - this is where I feel I'm now being a bit selfish. I was really looking forward to my folks coming down to visit once Ziggy's born and MrT's had to go back to work. The plan was that they would come in their camper van and stay on a campsite nearby so that we all had our own space but could visit and meet their first Grandchild. I guess this isn't going to happen now and if they come individually it just won't be the same. This is compounded by the fact that MrT's mother has already booked her train tickets to come on a date which suits her and will be staying with us - despite us asking that everyone wait until the baby's born before making arrangements and asking that while we're finding our feet nobody stays overnight with us. Apparently these requests made us evil and we were on the receiving end of the wrath of The Family - honestly they make the mafia look rational at times!
Anyway I'm just gutted for my folks - Dad especially has been through so much with years of depression and illness that this is so exciting for him and now it's all messed up again.
Still at least Grannie's ok - it's her 90th next week so I'm thinking something for the kitchen?
