OK so we're not exactly a small holding but after the weekend on much ground bashing, weed pulling and tree chopping we now have a garden which looks a bit more gardeny and a lot less weedy. Last year we had a bit of mud/weed outside the back door with some pots on which kinda got lost in the weeds. We got it all clear and put down some membrane. MrT plumbed in 2 water butts in series next to the back door. My wee greenhouse (one of those shelving units with a plastic cover) had been blown over many times (yes it had been screwed into the wall - it get really windy here) and the cover shredded. My Dad was meant to find a new cover but decided that a new greenhouse was cheaper (it was the same price). So now we have the old shelving unit attached the fence next to the water butts. It turns out that the Curate from our church owns a wood chipper so we borrowed it and made out own wood chips to cover the membrane. So now we have a pretty wood chippy area outside the door (incl. pansies in pots that my Mum did for us). We intend to do something similar (wood chips/membrane) at the other end of the garden in front of the shed once we get rid of the old shed which is currently still in a pile.
So after all that activity at the weekend yesterday after work I got all of the potatoes planted out the front and in 3 bags. My folks gave us a set of 3 recycling bags for Christmas a few years ago but as we don't have room for them and we have a box for all the recycling from the Council we thought we'd finally put them to use and plant potatoes in them. MrT and I then planted all of our seeds and we have:
- lettuce (in a bit of old guttering on top of the shelving unit to keep the slugs out)
- carrots
- tomatoes
- cucumbers
- courgettes
- sweetcorn
- squash (seeds from our own last year so we'll see what kind we get)
- spring onions
- sunflowers
- mixed herbs (they're little matchstick books so don't know what kind yet)
- "Italian Garden" (again matchstick seeds so not sure what they will be)
- The onion and garlic sets have been out all winter
- potatoes
We shall see what we get - I might do some more herbs this year too.

Sounds like a busy weekend!
3000 kg of top soil later, we've got 2 raised beds in our garden. Complete with 6 strawberry plants at the moment. We discovered our garden was in fact a builders yard of sand, gravel and large rocks, so raised beds were the only way to go. Its taken 3 months to get rid of the gravel and rocks...
I can't wait to plant! I've got various chillies, peppers and tomatoes growing on a window sill (hopefully!? it will be warm enough to put them outside), and lots of garlic in other bits of earth. We bought some of those potato bags so have about 8 of them full.
We're trying to cover the earth around the beds with bark chips (over one of those membranes) but the car can only hold 3 bags at a time so its taking many trips to the DIY store.
I'm hoping for purple sprouting broccoli, carrots, onions, salad leaves, perhaps corn, maybe a squash...and a nice warm summer so I can sit outside and appreciate it all :)
Wow that sounds awesome! Squash Warning - I didn't know last year that you can train squash tendrils in a coil to take up less room. We ended up with them reaching out halfway to the house.
